THIS is what I have to learn for Wednesday. For my Phonetics class, my BRITISH Phonetics class. Yes, it’s driving me insane. British intonation and patterns of speech. There are 10 main ways in which you can say a segment of speech (each is separated from the rest by a |). Each way is used for a different reason (contrast, friendliness, indifference, etc.), but it also depends on if you’re saying a statement, an interjection, a yes-no question, etc.
For my test, I have to read out loud following the little marks on the page and explain why each different intonation is used and not another. My mental sanity is seriously at stake here.
